Processors, the chips that power our smartphones, can often be overlooked and remembered only by their catchy names. As long as they work, don’t overheat, and offer incrementally more power and performance each year, it’s hard to get too excited about them, especially when so much magic happens in the background without That we are even aware of it.

So when someone comes along that does something completely different from the crowd, it should make us all sit up and take notice, and that’s exactly what MediaTek has done with the Dimensity 9300.

There’s a problem with talking about processors: they’re incredibly nervous, and you have to be very nervous to understand what makes them special and how innovative they can be. That’s still the case when you check out the MediaTek Dimension 9300, but you don’t have to be an engineering guru to get the potential impact of the headline changes.

It is the world’s first smartphone chip to use an all-core design. MediaTek and partner TSMC have built the 4nm Dimensity 9300 differently from their previous flagship chips and from Qualcomm’s approach to Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The all-core design includes an extra-large ARM Cortex X4 chip clocked at 3.25 GHz, three more ARM Cortex X4 clocked at 2.85 GHz, and finally, four large ARM Cortex A720 clocked at 2 GHz.

Until now, the established method for building multi-core processors for smartphones has been ARM’s big.LITTLE method, where large cores handle heavy work and smaller cores provide power for simple tasks. This approach increases battery life and lowers temperature, improving performance when you’re not stressing the phone. ARM introduced the concept in 2011, and it has since been adopted by MediaTek, Qualcomm, Samsung, and other chipmakers.

According to MediaTek, the changes made with the Dimensity 9300 show improvements over the Dimensity 9200, which uses the big.LITTLE concept of combining large and small cores. Compared to the previous generation, the 9300 has a 15% increase in single-core performance and a 40% increase in multi-core performance. It also says the chip will deliver higher performance with better efficiency by reducing power consumption by 10 to 15 percent compared to the 9200.

There’s a lot more technology in the MediaTek Dimension 9300, too. For example, it uses the ARM Immortalis G720 graphics processing unit (GPU), which is the latest version of the company, and has a next-generation artificial intelligence processor called the APU 720, which is designed to improve the performance of productive artificial intelligence and double the performance It has more than that. The Dimensity 9300 could be the first of a new generation of chips that will revolutionize mobile devices and a design that will be copied by other chipmakers, or it could be a bold but ultimately unsuccessful experiment.

It’s been a long time since a processor was this anxious. Despite MediaTek being the world’s top smartphone chipmaker, it’s a very close race with Qualcomm, and it’s yet to make inroads into flagship devices around the world. It could have easily continued with the status quo, competing but not innovating, but instead, it decided to take a risk and try something new.

It’s very difficult, and we don’t see such confident moves very often. It’s also the first time in a long time that I actually care about a new smartphone processor, which is why I think you should check it out.

The first smartphones with the Dimensity 9300 will hit the market by the end of the year, and I’m looking forward to trying them out. Unfortunately, MediaTek’s flagship processors don’t always power phones launched in the US, but it has recently worked with OnePlus, Samsung and Asus, so there’s little chance the Dimensity 9300 will appear outside of Asia in the future.
