White House says Illinois tech hubs will focus on agricultural production, quantum computing

The White House announced a series of tech hubs across the country to focus on topics related to artificial intelligence, clean energy and more, and two of those hubs will be located in Illinois.

The Chicago and Champaign-based centers were among 31 projects listed for funding through the program, according to the Biden administration.

President Joe Biden said these technology centers will be transformative and part of a series of transformative investments we’ve made since I took office.

More than $10 billion in funding is available through a bill passed in 2022 that aims to help address shortages in semiconductor manufacturing and supply chains, along with other technology-related issues in the U.S., according to a White House press release. united

According to the White House, one of the Illinois-based hubs, the Central Illinois Center for Fermentation Bioproduction and Agriculture (iFAB), will be located on the campus of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

Illinois, the largest producer of soybeans and the second largest producer of corn, will take the lead in identifying measures that will help improve food security as well as bolster decarbonization efforts, according to the White House.

Home to world-class institutions and world-class research centers, Illinois is transforming technology, biomanufacturing and innovation at every turn, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said in a statement.

According to a press release, the Chicago Area Center for Quantum Technology brings together public, private and academic partners to advance the regional adoption of quantum information science and technology by creating a framework that can be used across industries.

The framework targets the financial sector, but can also be applied to manufacturing, healthcare, transportation and defense sectors.
