Now you can exchange numbers just by tapping iPhones. Here’s how to use it

  • You can exchange contact information by holding your iPhones next to each other.
  • Both iPhones must be updated to iOS 17.
  • This feature reduces the possibility of typos or mistakes in entering people’s contact information.

The next time you’re at a networking event or dinner party, you can exchange phone numbers with a new colleague or friend just by holding your iPhones close together.

Known as NameDrop, the feature became available when Apple released iOS 17 in September.

NameDrop is faster than reading numbers out loud or switching phones and manually punching in contact information. Plus, you don’t have to worry about misspelling your new contact’s name. It’s just transferred directly to your phone.

Apple lets you choose what you share with someone when you use NameDrop, so you don’t accidentally give out sensitive information you might have stored on your phone, like your home address. One drawback: you can’t share your email and phone number at the same time, and you can only NameDrop once between two phones unless you delete the contact and start over.

Here’s how to try it for yourself.

  • Unlock your iPhone (this feature will not work with a locked phone).
  • Place the top of one phone right on top of the other as in the image above this story.
  • Wait about three seconds and a message will appear on your screen.
  • You can press “Get Only” or “Share” and you can press the down arrow to choose which of your contacts you want to send.
  • To get each other’s contact information, you both need to press “Share”.
  • If only one of you needs contact information, that person should press “Get Only.” The other person still has to press “share” to agree.
  • If you get to this point and realize you don’t want to do this, just swipe up to exit NameDrop.
  • After receiving the new contact, you will see the contact page. You can change the contact however you want, but if that’s what you’re looking for, just hit “Done” in the top left.
